FAQ

WHEN I TRY TO CONNECT TO THE INTERNET MY COMPUTER TELLS ME

NO DIAL TONE

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN AND HOW DO I FIX IT?

MOST OF THE TIME IF YOUR COMPUTER TELLS YOU THAT IT DOES NOT

HAVE A DIAL TONE THE MODEM HAS BEEN HIT BY A POWER SURGE AND

THE MODEM CANNOT DETECT THE DIAL TONE.  CHECK THE DIAL TONE WITH

A REGULAR  TELEPHONE IN THE SAME JACK.  IF YOU HAVE A DIAL TONE THERE

THEN CHECK TO SEE IF YOU CAN PLUG THE TELEPHONE INTO THE MODEM

WITH THE SECOND PASS THRU JACK ON THE COMPUTER MODEM. IF YOU

HAVE A DIAL TONE THERE THEN THE MODEM IS PROBABLY DEAD AND WILL

NEED TO BE REPLACED.  FOR A BETTER DIAGNOSTICS OF THE MODEM YOU WILL

NEED TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT BY A TECH THAT HAS THE EQUIPMENT TO

TEST THE MODEM.  MODEMS NORMALLY COST BETWEEN 20 TO 80 DOLLARS AND

USUALLY INSTALLED AT A VERY LOW COST.

WHEN I TRY TO CONNECT I GET AN ERROR 691 CHECK YOUR PASSWORD

THE FIRST THING I WOULD TELL YOU TO CHECK IS TO MAKE SURE THAT YOUR

LOGIN AND PASSWORD ARE BOTH CORRECT WITH YOUR RECORDS.

THEN I WOULD SIMPLY JUST DIAL YOUR INTERNET PHONE NUMBER AND MAKE

SURE THAT YOU ARE GETTING THRU TO THE INTERNET PROVIDER.

IF BOTH OF THESE ARE OK THEN CALL YOUR INTERNET PROVIDER AND LET HIM

CHECK AND MAKE SURE YOUR LOGIN AND PASSWORD ARE THE  SAME ON THE MAIN

SERVER, THIS IS FOR TEST FOR YOUR RIGHTS TO GET ON THE INTERNET.

THEY COULD ALSO CHECK OTHER SETTINGS AND MAKE SURE YOU ARE STILL SET

TO WORK WITH THEIR SETUP.

WHEN I TURN ON THE COMPUTER IT TELLS ME

NO OPERATING SYSTEM FOUND

OR

INVALID SYSTEM DISK

INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

THERE COULD BE A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT PROBLEMS.  MOST OF THE TIME

THIS MEANS THAT THE COMMAND.COM FILE HAS BEEN DELETED.  THE HARD DRIVE

COULD HAVE BEEN ERASED  OR DELETED. MAYBE A VIRUS HAS REMOVED THE

MASTER BOOT RECORD SO THE COMPUTER DOES NOT KNOW WHERE TO BOOT FROM.

THESE ARE THE EASIER AND CHEAPER PROBLEMS TO FIX. YOU SHOULD FIRST BOOT

FROM A FLOPPY DISK AND SEE IF THERE IS STILL DATA ON THE HARD DRIVE.

IF YOU CAN SEE DATA THEN IT IS PROBABLY SIMPLY A DELETION OR A VIRUS.

NEXT RUN AN ANTIVIRUS FROM A CD OR A FLOPPY DISK. YOU MAY EVEN HAVE TO

RUN THE ANTIVIRUS FROM A SEPARATE DRIVE.

IF YOU COMPUTER IS MAKING ANY KIND OF CLICKING SOUNDS THEN

A GOOD CHANCE  THAT THE HARD DRIVE IS HAVING SOME HARDWARE PROBLEM

AND MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED.   IT WOULD BE ADVISABLE TO LET SOMEONE

WITH THE PROPER EQUIPMENT TEST THE COMPUTER FOR YOU AND MAKE

SUGGESTIONS OF WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR COMPUTER.

IF YOU ARE STILL HAVING TROUBLE PLEASE CALL US AT 276 889 5738 AND

ASK FOR A TECH.
